In response to the common practice of offices, restaurants, warehouses or retail stores sending tons of cardboard, aluminum, plastic and paper to landfills every year, the State of California now requires most businesses to recycle these commodities to prevent unnecessary tons of material going to landfills.

Legislature passed AB341 (Chesbro) last year relating to mandatory commercial recycling, which applies to every commercial facility that generates more than 4 cubic yards of trash a week.  A standard commercial bin or “dumpster” is 3 cubic yards. Therefore, if you have one or more of these bins serviced more than once a week, the State now requires implementing recycling at your facility.  The legislation also applies to every multi-family residential dwelling of five units or more.

Consolidated Disposal Service (CDS) is the franchised hauler responsible for assisting the City of Cypress to comply with the new state law.  To begin recycling at your place of business, please contact CDS’ Customer Service Department at (800) 347-4000.

The goal of the pilot program is to increase recyclable materials diversion in the business sector by two to five percent in the cities of Cypress and Seal Beach.

Eligible parties will receive a site inspection of their property to ensure that it is suitable for the pilot program.  The site inspection looks at several criteria including if there is adequate enclosed space for a recycling bin at your business/dwelling, if your business/dwelling generates enough recyclables to fill a bin on a regular basis, and if an additional recycling bin be allowed to be placed at your business/dwelling.

Recycling bins can only be used for recyclables.  Chronic contamination can result in program discontinuation. They will also look at if businesses/dwellings currently have a recycling program and if they would benefit by increasing the amount of bins available for use.

Businesses/dwellings will be required to have a representative available to take responsibility for monitoring the program.
