Sarah Hultman, an Oxford Academy junior from Buena Park, was awarded the 2016 Ginger Anderson Scholarship for Fashion Design at Teen Fashion Scene, an annual showcase presented by the Recreation and Community Services departments of the cities of Cypress and La Palma.
Currently in its 10th year, the runway show features local teens modeling fashions from popular clothing stores and fashion boutiques, as well as original pieces from teen designers.
Sarah Hultman, an Oxford Academy junior from Buena Park, was awarded the 2016 Ginger Anderson Scholarship for Fashion Design at Teen Fashion Scene, an annual showcase presented by the Recreation and Community Services departments of the cities of Cypress and La Palma.

Each year, Ginger Anderson, a dance instructor for the City of Cypress for over 30 years, provides scholarships to up-and-coming teen fashion designers.
Cypress city councilwoman Stacy Berry presented the award for “Original Creative Design” to Hultman in recognition of her “Black Swan Collection”, showcased at the runway event. Inspired by the Darren Aronofsky film starring Natalie Portman, the collection adopts the movie’s dark tonal palette and calls to mind its stylistic pastiche of the worlds of ballet and high fashion, as well as its meditations on the nature of artistic genius and madness.
Hultman’s interest in fashion and apparel design dates back to elementary school.
Featured in the Orange County Register at the age of 11 masquerading as Abigail Adams at the Nixon Library’s annual Presidents Day celebration, she was determined to create original costumes and fashion pieces and would sketch new designs in her free time.
She honed her craft in 2014 at Fashion Camp in Tustin, and in the summer of 2015, she enrolled in fashion design classes at Otis College of Art and Design.
Since that time, Hultman has continued to sketch and fabricate original costumes and high-fashion dresses.
When not designing, she is busy maintaining a 4.67 weighted GPA and working to promote arts education in schools and student involvement in the community.
Besides Hultman, who modeled her own pieces on the runway, the 10th Annual Teen Fashion Scene featured more than 50 models currently attending Cypress and La Palma schools, including Oxford Academy, Cypress High School, Kennedy High School, and Lexington Junior High School.
The local teens modeled spring fashions from such popular stores as Stitch & Feather, Kanvas by Katin, Wild Pepper Sports, Vans, Elison Road, Styles for Less, Furnace, The Denim Bar, and Harvey Girls Gallery.
