Nominate a local Veteran for an award in Cypress

Recently, AYSO Region 154 Cypress announced the league is soliciting names of veterans from the community to recognize and honor during this year’s 25th Annual Cypress Memorial Classic.  Families and friends are being asked to submit their names of deceased, retired, honorably discharged, and active duty service men and women to the league.  AYSO Cypress intends to place each name on a banner that will hang from various light poles around the city.

“Our Board of Directors wants to thank and honor all those who have served.” said Jimmy Fuller, Tournament Director of this year’s Memorial Classic. “Other cities in Southern California have banners honoring their service members but Cypress does not.  We have a very large tournament over Memorial Day weekend and this is a perfect opportunity for the league to partner with the community.”
Who Can Submit Their Name?
The veteran recognition program is open to all.  There is no cost to anyone submitting a name.  However due to the limited number of light pole banners being purchased this year (approximately 45) we will give priority to the communities that our league serves.  They are Cypress, Buena Park, La Palma, West Anaheim, and parts of Stanton.  The AYSO 154 Board of Directors will do everything they can to honor all names submitted.  The application is located on the AYSO 154 & Cypress Memorial Classic’s website.  www.ayso154.org or www.memorialday154.org.  The applications can be e-mailed directly to the tournament director at memorialday@ayso154.org.  If preferred they can also be mailed to the tournament at: Cypress Memorial Classic, Attn: Jimmy Fuller, PO Box 999, Cypress, CA  90630.
Where Do The Banners Hang?  What Do They Look Like?
The banners will be hung in various locations in Cypress.  The main areas are Orange Ave/Denni St in front of Lexington Jr. High & Arnold.  A few will be in front of Cypress City Hall & Oak Knoll Park.  The remainder will be hung along Valley View & Katella.  The design of the banners is still being finalized but once complete will be released to the public.  AYSO hopes this will be the first of many years to come for the veteran recognition program.
Founded in 1977, AYSO Region 154 is celebrating its 40th anniversary of providing quality, affordable youth soccer to the children of Cypress. AYSO 154 is the City of Cypress’ largest youth sports group supporting over 1,600 players annually.  Each year Region 154 hosts the Cypress Memorial Classic.  Dubbed as Cypress’ second largest event, the tournament plays host to over 150 teams representing over 2,000 youth athletes.  The three day tournament draws nearly 15,000 people to the City of Cypress.
