An open house is scheduled to give local residents an update on a proposed project along Katella Avenue next to the Cottonwood Church.

The proposed project is reported to be a distribution center for Prologis a company that specializes in developing and managing industrial real estate.

The open house will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 19 at the clubhouse of the former Cypress Golf Course at 4921 Katella Ave. next to the Los Alamitos Race Course. The event will allow residents to drop in and find out more about what the project will entail.

There has already been speculation that it will require reconfiguring Katella Avenue to include a signal at Enterprise and Katella, a proposal that had met with resistance from members of the community at a city council meeting last year.

Any proposed signal light at Enterprise Drive and Katella Avenue is expected to meet with more resistance from the community, many of whom argued that it is a safety issue. Los Alamitos Mayor Warren Kusumoto said he understands the concerns, but is hopeful that community members don’t simply dig in their heels and offer no compromises.

“I would like to have us establish a win-win-win situation,” Kusumoto said.

While the plot of land is in Cypress, the proposal would affect traffic in Los Alamitos, particularly along Katella Avenue. The open house meeting will allow the community to offer their concerns and suggestions to the company prior to major construction beginning. Kusumoto said he was told by the company that they had met with Los Alamitos city staff members last year, but that no report has been presented to the council as of yet. He is hopeful that the council will get an update soon.

“I would have liked to have heard something from our staff,” Kusumoto told the News Enterprise.

Messages to a local Prologis official on Monday was not returned. A call to their corporate headquarters in San Francisco requesting information on Tuesday was not responded to as of press time.
