Los Alamitos Medical Center (LAMC) celebrated National Nurses Week with an elegant breakfast, snack treats from the physicians, an afternoon clinical presentation to show off the hard work of the nursing staff, and a presentation of a DAISY Award to one most-deserving nurse.
Los Alamitos Medical Center honored Rolando Perez-Morales with a DAISY award. Rolo came to LAMC as a new graduate in 2011 and quickly became a patient favorite.  He is passionate about nursing and it shows in the care he gives to his patients.  He is the recipient of numerous patient accolades.  The presentation of the DAISY Award was done as a surprise, but as word spread that the administration team was on their way through the halls, a crowd gathered to watch and listen to the presentation.  Some staff were moved to tears to hear of Rolo’s selfless dedication to his patients.  He was recognized by the hospital’s leadership team and received a certificate proclaiming him as an “extraordinary nurse”, a DAISY Award pin, and a unique and beautiful hand-carved stone sculpture entitled “A Healer’s Touch.”
The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation and was created in the memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33.  Patrick’s family came up with the award as a way of honoring Patrick’s memory after an eight-week hospital stay.  They wanted to say “thank you” to nurses everywhere with a special recognition program. There are three elements to the DAISY Award: a partnership with healthcare organizations to provide on-going recognition of the clinical skill and compassion nurses provide to patients, flexibility so that facilities can tailor the award to their individual culture and values, and lastly, a program that is easily replicated and turn-key with the DAISY Foundation providing most everything needed to implement the award.
All the nurses and staff in the recipient’s unit are treated to Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls at every presentation. The reason?  Once, Patrick ate his father’s Cinnabon roll when he was in the hospital without an appetite for food.  He then requested one for the next day – and enough for all the nurses in the unit.  Several other nurses were nominated for this inspirational award and they received DAISY pins.
The DAISY Award is now awarded all over the U.S. and beyond.  Los Alamitos Medical Center is proud to have Rolando providing care to our community, our friends, and our family members.
