One of Orange County’s best known and the world’s oldest service club organization recognized for combating hunger, improving health and sanitation, providing education and much more honored outstanding citizens at Rotary District 5320’s 2013 Business Leadership Awards. The event was held Friday, Oct. 18 at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange.

Outstanding members were honored from the district’s four regions. The Leadership Excellence award was presented to Sean Payne of the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos/ Seal Beach. Payne is Vice President for the Los Alamitos Education Foundation, a board member for Precious Life Shelter, and Past-President of the Rotary Club. He and his wife, Amy, started a non-profit called Summer Harvest that provides healthy produce and groceries to school families on the free and reduced lunch program. Payne is a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones in Seal Beach and has served in many volunteer leadership roles within the firm.

Other awards included Business Rotarian of the Year, Ethics in Business award, and Community Leader award, a new category in the awards competition designed to recognize a non-Rotarian.

There are more than 1000 Rotarians in over 40 clubs in the district.

“Rotary has come to be known as an organization defined by the compassion and great work of its dedicated members,” said District Governor Rae Shirer.  “We are pleased to recognize these outstanding Rotarians.”

A committee of representatives from the four regions were tasked with selecting honorees for each of the four awards from the nominations received.

All nominees were required to serve as effective examples of the application of the Four Way Test in their daily business lives.

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Additionally, nominees had to demonstrate leadership in their vocational field, community activity beyond Rotary and humanitarian service. They must also be active members for three years or more.
