The News Enterprise Article by the reverend, Mike Wilson, fears for Cottonwood Church. While a great ghost story for Halloween, it ignores the real nightmare Cypress residents are facing under Measure GG.
It is very important to note that while the Race Track and Golf Course owners own the land, they do not own the rights to develop the property.  Those rights belong to the residents of Cypress.  Many, many residents I have spoken with want to maintain the property as largely open space land.  

School board recognizes U.S. Army All-American Marching Band students

The Los Alamitos Unified School District board recognized three students from the high school marching band who have been selected to perform in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Marching Band at its regular meeting last week.
Los Al students Eriq Perez, Kevin Tamashiro and Preston Crandall were among 125 students nationwide who will perform at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game featuring the top high school senior football players in the country and broadcast on NBC.

Halloween costume contest winners crowned

Kimberly Isom, a 4-year-old from Anaheim, won the $700 top prize during Saturday’s annual Los Alamitos Halloween Carnival. Isom was dressed as a Caterpillar in a Fruit Tray, an original costume made by her family.
Isom kept popping in and out of the bright red apple and flashed a big smile from behind her lime green face paint.
The costume won the judges over and made one of the youngest overall winners in the event’s history.

RCSD appoints new board member

The Rossmoor Community Services District Board of Directors appointed Mark Nitikman to fill the vacancy on the Board resulting from the resignation of Dave Burgess at their regular monthly meeting held on Tuesday, Oct.11.
Nitikman previously served on the RCSD Board from 2005 – 2008 and also has served as President of the RHA from 2014 – 16.
He was one of the three applicants viewing for the appointment along with Richard Butterfield and Shaz Umer.
Interviews were conducted as part of the Board’s meeting on Oct. 11 and were open to the public.

School district cuts interest rate by half on old bond

Under the leadership of the Los Alamitos School Board, the Los Alamitos Unified School District chose to take advantage of historically low interest rates to refinance some of its old G.O. Bonds without extending the term of those Bonds.
The District selected the right time to refinance the Bonds and was able to reduce the interest rate on the prior Bonds from 6.06 percent to 3.07 percent, reducing the community’s tax bill by about $3.948 million.

Youth center receives big donation

Thanks to a $5,000 grant from Southern California Edison, nearly 140 children in the Los Alamitos Youth Center’s After School Program will have needed tutoring and academic resources.
 “This grant will help us provide more tutors, as well as the materials such as computers, supplies and educational resources we use to make the After School Program highly beneficial to our students,” said Youth Center Executive Director Lina Lumme.

Scuba, snorkeling at Los Al High

Last spring, the Physical Education faculty at Los Alamitos High School met on multiple occasions to revise and revamp the P.E. instructional units.  A major addition to the curriculum this year is the SCUBA and snorkeling instructional unit.  The program began Monday, October 3 and continues through Thursday, October 27.  In conjunction with Left Coast SCUBA, the Los Alamitos High School P.E. staff is providing this opportunity to all students enrolled in Physical Education 9.

The Los Alamitos Race Track held its first horserace in 1947.  The Track has provided jobs, tax dollars and notoriety to the community for decades.  However the sun has begun to set on this local landmark.  The closing of the Race Track is inevitable and changes are certain.

Suspect tries baiting police into shooting him

A male who was later determined to be a 17 year old juvenile, came into the Los Alamitos Police Department lobby and threatened the unarmed professional staff at the front counter with a knife on Monday, October 10 at approximately 2:39 p.m., according to police.

Moroccan Party for We Care

It all began last April at the annual We Care “From the Heart” Fundraiser in Los Alamitos, and ended in September with a fantastic Moroccan themed party including a live camel. We Care live auction winners Julie and Tim Kadletz, Sharon and Butch Anderson, Ann and Steve Collins, Margaret and Jim Tyler and Suzi snd Tony Olsen were the lucky guests at the magical Moroccan party.  Upon arriving via magic carpet (limousine) and meeting their party camel JJ, guests enjoyed delicious Moroccan food and drinks while watching a belly dancer perform for them.

Los Al High names Merit semifinalists

The Los Alamitos Unified School District recently announced four National Merit Semifinalists and fourteen National Merit Commended Students for 2016-2017.
The Semi-finalists are students who scored in the top one percent of students who took the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) nationwide in fall 2015.  Commended students include those who placed among the top 5% of the more than 1.5 million students took this exam.  

Hopkinson receives national honor

Recently, U.S. Secretary of Education, John B. King, Jr. announced that Francis Hopkinson Elementary School has been named a 2016 National Exemplary High Performing Blue Ribbon School. Hopkinson is one of three schools in Orange County and among 279 public and 50 private schools receiving this honor across the nation.

Non-profit donates to youth center after-school program

What if you have two children in need of an after school program, and you can only afford for one to attend?  What if your child loves basketball, but the Youth Center only has one hoop and a lopsided ball for its after-school program?  Thanks to generous donations from Run Seal Beach, the Los Alamitos Youth Center has scholarship and equipment funds to meet those needs.   
For 2016, the Run Seal Beach Organizing Committee awarded $2,750 in scholarship money for the Youth Center’s Summer Camp Program, and an additional $3,400 for sports equipment.
