Letters to the Editor– Feb. 1: Responses to last week’s ‘Lowenthal’s inauguration absence’ letter; Village 605 worries

We stand with Alan Lowenthal
Dear Editor,
We are proud of Alan Lowenthal’s decision not to attend the inauguration of Donald J. Trump.
Republicans, Democrats and Independents in the 47th District sent a loud message on election day by voting for Hillary Clinton and Alan Lowehthal in big numbers.
This was the first time ever that Mr. Lowenthal won in the Orange County part of his district.

In her letter to the editor of the News Enterprise January 25, Nancy Hathcock claimed that Lowenthal was representing the boisterous minority of the 47th District by boycotting the inauguration of Donald J Trump.
Really? Alternate facts?
Nancy Hathcock also claims that Lowenthal has no desire to see our new President succeed.
What does she mean by success? Is taking health insurance from millions of Americans a success? Is putting oil rigs off the Seal Beach coast a success? Is Corporate welfare in terms for tax breaks for corporation a success? Is destroying the EPA so corporations can dump more garbage into our air a success?
Based on the results of the last election, we are proud to stand by Mr. Lowenthal’s decision to support the majority of the voters in the 47th District by not attending the inauguration of Donald J Trump

Resident comments on ‘Lowenthal’ letter
Dear Editor,
Although I did not feel strongly one way or the other about members of Congress boycotting President Trump’s inauguration, many people did as evidenced by Nancy Hathcock’s letter published here on January 25, 2017.  I honor what I am sure was a well-considered decision by Congressman Lowenthal.  Becoming an elected official does not require one to forfeit one’s right to peacefully protest.
I am compelled to write, however, concerning the writer’s leap connecting one’s not attending a ceremony to opposing a peaceful transition of power. The former has nothing to do with the latter. Also, I would suggest that Congressman Lowenthal did not represent a minority opinion in his District; rather, a majority of his constituents in the 47th District voted against our current President and his agenda.  In fact, Orange County overwhelmingly rejected President Trump by voting for the Democratic candidate for the first time since it voted for FDR. I, along with with majority of his constituents, support and thank Congressman Lowenthal for his continued service on our behalf.

Village 605 worries
Editor’s note: The following letter was submitted before the announcement of the appeal withdrawal on Jan. 29.
Dear Editor,
This is regarding the proposed development called Village 605, recently approved by the Los Alamitos Planning Commission for the property on Katella, just off of the 605.
I am stunned that the Planning Commission approved an enormous sign that will literally be in the backyard of Oak Middle School, standing 120 feet high with 3000 square feet of sign space and a 555 square foot “jumbo-tron” for rotating advertisements.
Let me remind our city officials that an important objective of the Planning Commission (and I quote from their website) is to ensure any new development is “high quality, attractive and compatible in scale with surrounding development.”
The fact is that the “surrounding development” are lovely homes, an award winning middle school, and a new walking trail along the river.  Even the roadside bordering our end of the 605 is rather nice, with trees and foliage. A mammoth digital sign seems hardly “compatible in scale” with its surroundings.  Are we trying to rival the Hawaiian Gardens Casino and the Cerritos Auto Square for biggest and brightest billboard this side of the 605 freeway?
Let’s rethink this digital sign before it is built.  It is not compatible with its surroundings, so it is not a fit for Los Alamitos.
