Outgoing base commander, Lieutenant Colonel Susan E. Russell, relinquished command of the California Army National Guard Training Site Detachment to Major Joel Armstrong. Overseeing the change was Commander of the 40th Infantry Division, Brigadier General Keith D. Jones.
Russell has served as the base commander, as well as the commander of the National Guard Headquarters detachment on the base for the past two years. Armstrong takes over as the new commander and will retain his duty as the director of the Sunburst Youth ChalleNGe Academy on the base.
The event was attended by local legislators and dignitaries, including Cypress Mayor Pro Tem Leroy Mills and Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) William Mayhue, who recently retired as the deputy commander of the JFTB.
