Griffins advance to Best of West semifinals

The Los Alamitos High softball team won its first two games of the Best of the West Tournament to advance to the semifinals. Ace Ryan Denhart pitched a shutout in the opener as the Griffins defeated Westlake, 8-0, on Saturday.
Denhart pitched five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Alexa Schultz had two hits, including a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Mary Iakopo and Andrea Gonzalez also homered for the Griffins.

In their second game, Denhart pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit and one run in a 3-1 win over San Marcos. Denhart struck out six. Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored. Cami Sellers went 3 for 3 with an RBI.
Los Alamitos will travel to Arizona for the Tournament of Champions this week sand will return to the Best of the West on March 18. The Griffins are scheduled to face Mater Dei at 11 a.m. on March 18, at Pacifica High.
The Griffins were ranked No. 1 in Orange County in the OC Register rankings, while Mater Dei was ranked No. 7.
In the first CIF-SS Division 1 rankings, the Griffins were ranked No. 3 and the Monarchs placed No. 4. Pacifica, which is in the semifinals of the other half of the bracket, is ranked No. 8 in the CIF-SS rankings.
