A fire in the early evening on September 4 left a modular classroom at the Los Alamitos Community Center uninhabitable and has displaced a preschool class to another room at the center.
The electrical fire reportedly started in wiring underneath the back corner of the building, but was contained and extinguished by Orange County Fire Authority personnel approximately 15 minutes after being reported.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, just before 6 p.m. But the room was set up to house the Ready, Set, Go! preschool class, starting Thursday. The students were moved to another room for the first day of school.
“Personnel from OCFA did an outstanding job of containing the fire to the modular building and the city was very fortunate that the preschool and other adjacent buildings were not occupied at the time the fire ignited,” said Los Alamitos Police Captain Bruce McAlpine.
The estimated damage to the building and contents was about $25,000 to $35,000. City Manager Angie Avery speculated that the modular building was likely a total loss and would need to be replaced. Orange County Fire Authority is investigating the fire to determine what caused it.
