Local favorites The Emperors and Flyer will be two of the bands performing at the Sugar Beet Festival to be held June 7 at the Shops at Rossmoor.

The Emperors will take the stage following the 5k-ish Sugartown Challenge, and will perform from 10 a.m. to noon. The group started playing in the 1960s and built up a strong local following until disbanding in the 1980s to pursue real life. But after a successful reunion concert in 2002, the group got back together and have been delighting audiences all over Southern California since then – most regularly at Phil Trani’s and the new Boathouse on the Bay (formerly McKenna’s on the Bay).

The Emperors are: Steve Watts (drums, keyboards, vocals), Randy Budihas (drums, vocals), Joe Marques (bass , guitar, vocals), Dave Quintana (guitar, vocals) and Chip Walsh (keyboards, harmonica, vocals). More information on the group is available at their website – www.emperorrocks.com.

Flyer, a trio composed of Todd and Nancy Hartmann and Joe Forney, have been entertaining locals with classic Eagles, Beatles, Stones, Doobie Brothers, Clapton, Santana and more for the past 34 years and counting. They will take the stage at 1:30 p.m.

Also performing at the festival will be the Oak Middle School Jazz Band, and the students from Onstage Dance Center in Los Alamitos.

More information about the festival and the 5k-ish Sugartown Challenge is available at www.sugarbeetfestival.com.

Contests abound at Sugar Beet Festival

As if over 60 vendors, good food from local restaurants, some great entertainment, and booths from almost 30 non-profits wasn’t enough, the second Southland Credit Union Sugar Beet Festival – to be held June 7 at The Shops at Rossmoor – will also feature a number of contests.

The Sugar Beet Photo Bomb is a photography contest with the objective of depicting everyday life, work and play in the West OC and East LB.  Over 250 photos have already been submitted by local photographers, capturing a snapshot of the community’s individuals, schools, organizations, businesses, sports, pets, homes, daily activities and whatever. For those still wishing to submit photos, the entry deadline is June 1. For more information and contest rules please visit the contest page at www.sugarbeetfestival.com.

Pie Eating Contest

Have you ever wondered if you could eat a whole pie? And if so, how fast? Thanks to Marie Callender’s Grill and their great berry pies, the Sugar Beet Festival is holding an old fashion pie eating contest at 1:10 p.m. on the main stage.  If you are interested in participating sign up at the information table June 7 before 12:30 p.m.

Cooking Contest

The only rule is that you need to use Sugar Beets in your recipe. You might not know what a Sugar Beet is or where to get one, but they can help with that – contact Diana Hill at 310-720-7677 or dhill@dianadhill.com. The entree can be a dessert, main course or snack, but must be submitted by 10:30 a.m. on June 7. There is no cooking on site.

Smiling Baby Contest

Does your baby have the best smile in the world? Then enter her (or him) in the Smiling Baby Contest, sponsored by Rascals to Rebels. This contest is for babies’ up to one year old.
