City to send out surveys for input

The City of Los Alamitos will be reaching out to the community with a survey to determine how it will spend a $358,000 Utility Users Tax rebate.

The city is weighing several options and looking for suggestions that may not have been considered. The $358,000 would be a one-time expenditure that is equal to one percent of the UUT. An Ad Hoc Subcommittee determined that a community survey would be the best option for gathering community feedback.

The survey is expected to be completed and mailed to homes in Los Alamitos as part of the recreation guide in November.

“This is a chance for you to have a say in how your tax dollars are spent,” Council member Gerri Graham-Mejia said.

So far the ten options being considered are:

  • Develop a Community Garden
  • Install a Digital Marquee
  • Emergency Kits for every Household
  • Expand free Summer Parks Program
  • Iconic city-wide Signage
  • Light Pole Banners
  • Oak Gym refurbishment
  • Plant trees
  • Seed money for Sugar Beet Festival
  • Senior Trips Scholarship Program

More suggestions will also be taken. The committee had set a criteria for programs that would be considered. First, the idea should benefit a broad range of the community. Ideas should benefit all age groups in the community. Ideas should be different from the usual city services that are viewed as part of the city’s operating budget. And, the project should benefit and/or beautify the city in some way.

Once the surveys are tabulated, the subcommittee will make a recommendation to the City Council for approval.
