Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) announced that the Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy Committee unanimously passed his two common sense bills to expand California’s role in global markets and grow the economy.
“It is crucial that California capitalize on the international trade opportunities that will develop as we move forward with the recently signed Free Trade Agreements with Korea, Panama, Colombia, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. With increased competition from other states and nations, coupled with the widening of the Panama Canal in 2015, I am proud to move California forward through legislation that will maintain California’s competitive advance in international trade and grow our economy,” said Assemblyman Allen.
California ports handle approximately 45 percent of all the waterborne containerized cargo coming into the United States. Port activities employ more than 500,000 people and generate an estimated $7 billion in state and local taxes annually. This legislative package has received strong support from industry stakeholders including the California Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce, The Harbor Association of Industry & Commerce, as well as the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership.
Both bills unanimously passed out of committee:
AB 412 – Economic Revitalization Act
Requires that the Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development to provide a study of the potential roles of the state in global markets and review the recent actions taken to enhance their role, create jobs, and import and export more goods.
AB 886 – Job and Trade Competitiveness Act
Will protect and create jobs for Californians statewide by providing tax incentives for infrastructure projects, job creation, and expanding global markets to help California’s economy through the importation and exportation of goods.
“The unanimous support received by these bills today shows that we can work in a bipartisan fashion to grow our economy and create jobs. California’s international trade sector is a powerful engine driving California’s economy and it is important to we work together to protect our competitive advantage, grow our economy and create jobs,” said Allen.
