The La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) launched a new group which will meet monthly, tentatively called the “Breakfast Club” with their first meeting held on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m. at Hof’s Hut restaurant in Los Alamitos.
The group was formed, “to give members, prospective members, and friends a time to simply get together and chat while enjoying a delicious breakfast,” according to AAUW’s Co-Vice President (in charge of membership), Nancy Kawamura.
“The local AAUW already has a calendar full of events, several interest groups and many members have busy personal schedules in addition, but this Breakfast Club presented an opportunity to just stop and smell the roses,” she said. “Thirteen members of the club enjoyed their friendships with each other and caught up with their personal activities, upcoming events, such as sports, and verbally solving the problems of the world, etc.” Kawamura added that it was “a wonderful time to just sit, eat, chat, and enjoy each other’s company.”
New AAUW member Barbara Sparks said that she enjoyed the Breakfast Club so much that she wants to start one like it in her Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary where she is membership chairman.
The La Palma-Cerritos AAUW is open to all women who have attained at least an AA or Bachelor’s Degree or higher in any major area of study. The branch usually meets on the third Thursdays of each month at the Cerritos Library, with some changes of venue due to special events held at the library or in members’ homes. One change of venue occurs in February this year.
The February meeting will be a Funds Brunch that will be held on Feb. 23, at the home of Carol Marsh at 5092 Cadiz Circle in La Palma. The brunch will raise monies for the AAUW Funds that provides funding for graduate women. Guest speaker will be Brenda Vasquez, (an AAUW grant winner at USC), who will explain how the AAUW grant helped her career.
Members and prospective members are invited to come to the Funds Brunch for a donation of $30 each. Reservations are required by Feb. 17. For reservations or more information regarding the brunch, please contact Thea Siegel at 562-926-3667 or Dorothy Edwards at 714-995-1148.
