Griffins drop close game to Servite

The Los Alamitos High boys basketball team dropped a close game to Servite. 38-35, in a tournament game at the Tustin/Estancia Tournament on Dec. 26 at Tustin High.

The Griffins were led by senior guard Khalid Washington with 14 points and sophomore guard Eyassu Worku who added 12.

The Griffins and Friars played a tight game the whole way, with the Friars taking a 19-17 lead into halftime. Junior wing, Trevor Treinen led the Friars with 20 points. The Friars jumped out to a 24-17 lead early in the third, before the Griffins battled back to tie the game at 27-27.

The game was again tied at 33-33 midway through the fourth quarter after two free throws by Washington. Treinen gave the Friars a 37-35 lead with a jump shot and Washington answered with two more free throws after he was fouled on a shot attempt. Servite regained the lead with two free throws by Louis Juego, who had seven points for the Friars.

With 34.5 seconds left in the game, the Griffins made a steal as the Friars tried to run the clock down. But a three point attempt by Los Al fell short and the Friars were able to hang on for the win.

Los Al had four points from Ryan Kusch and three from Devin Pagett. Servite had five points from Patrick Aruya and three from Jeff Toomey.
