The Cypress High football team delivered an impressive performance for Homecoming. It posted a dominant 30-3 victory against Los Amigos on Friday, Sept. 13 at Western High in Anaheim.
The win helped the Centurions (3-0) stay unbeaten while the Lobos (1-1) suffered their first loss. Despite the final outcome on the scoreboard, Cypress head coach Bob Burt confessed his team still has some work to do.
“It was a good effort, but I think we made way too many penalties,” Cypress head coach Bob Burt said. ‘Still, a win is a win – I’ll take it.”
Centurions quarterback Nick Buras, who recorded three touchdowns, gave the opposition fits on the ground and in the air. He would complete 8-of-18 passes for 178 yards for a pair of touchdowns.
“I thought our quarterback played exceptional,” Burt said. “Our kicker, too, having never played a varsity game.”
Cypress kicker Aspen Smith, who booted a trio of field goals, drew first blood. He did the deed with a 38-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Smith would later add field goals of 34 and 32 yards.
The Centurions would add 17 more points in the second quarter. Buras, who scrambled for 103 yards, scored a 27-yard run to take a 10-0 lead. He then connected with Quinten Pounds with a 28-yard strike.
Pounds finished with five catches for 140 yards. He would later catch a wide-open pass for a 40-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
As for the Cypress defense, Pounds, Logan Burt and Matthew Mantong all had interceptions.
The Lobos, who many experts believe will finish in the top 3 in the Garden Grove League, finally dented the board in the third quarter when kicker Brain Valdez split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal, which trimmed the deficit to 20-3.
The Lobos struggled offensively, especially in the first half as they made three turnovers – two of them interceptions. The Centurions actually held the Lobos to just 5 yards in the air.
Lobos running back Eduardo Perez still found some success. He managed to run 12 times for a game-high 111 yards.
Additionally, several Lobos played well on defense. That list included defensive end and team captain Alonzo Montes De Oca, who finished with two sacks and eight tackles.
“We never gave up,” Montes De Oca said. “We just couldn’t get anything going on offense, but we still played hard. I thought we gave a good defensive effort in the second half.”
Cypress wide receiver Tyler Hansen, who suffered a season-ending injury that required surgery, attended the game and watched from the sideline in a wheelchair.
