Best know for her work with the Precious Life Shelter in Los Alamitos, Theresa Murphy was recognized by Cypress College as the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Citizen of the Year at the recent Americana Awards. The 38th Annual event was held at the Disneyland Hotel.
Murphy is the Executive Director of the Precious Life Shelter, which offers housing and assistance to homeless pregnant women. But she is also involved in other philanthropic work in and around the Los Alamitos area.
Los Alamitos City Councilman, Dean Grose represented the city and was Murphy’s escort to the stage for her awards presentation. Because of her commitment to helping others, Grose said he was honored to be a part of the presentation as the city’s representative.
“Theresa is the kind of person who truly reflects the values of our community. Her recognition at the Cypress College Foundation Americana Awards as the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Citizen of the Year Award is a befitting honor for a very humble woman who is always willing to help others, whether at Precious Life Shelter or with other non-profit organizations,” Grose said.
Precious Life offers help to pregnant adult women who are looking to work towards self-reliance for themselves and their child. In addition to her work at Precious Life, Murphy is also a member of the Los Alamitos/Seal Beach Rotary and participates in the Los Alamitos High Grad Night. Her commitment to her service and to volunteerism is made her the choice by Cypress College this year. Raul Alvarez, Executive Director of Cypress College Foundation & Community Relations said her efforts not only help others, but inspire as well.
“Theresa Murphy is one of those extraordinary people you encounter in life who inspires others to achievements they never dreamed possible.” Alvarez said. “She accomplishes this by believing in them more than they believe in themselves, and through a fierce willingness to walk alongside them through every step of their journey.”
