Although qualifying is not officially over, it appears there will be some new names in local politics, where, in Los Alamitos and La Palma, new rules approved by their City Councils give some incumbents the chance to stay in office for decades.
State Assembly member Sharon Quirk Silva is termed out. Incumbents Marlys Davidson, Trustee, Los Alamitos Unified School District, and Lydia Sondhi, Ph.D., and Troy Tanaka, Cypress School District Trustees did not qualify for re-election. Rossmoor Director, Michael Maynard, also bowed out.
While the “official” qualifying period for the Nov. 3 election ended, state election rules provide for an extended qualification period in races where the incumbents do not qualify to run.
The extension period will officially end Aug. 12, so the names listed in this article are those only filed by August 11.

Finally, the City of Los Alamitos has offered a ballot measure seeking to raise its transient occupancy tax from 8 to 12 percent. The measure will raise approximately $300,000 more annually by taxing guests staying in the city.
