Patriots defeat Edison for 5th place in Marina tourney

After suffering their first loss of the season, to CIF-SS Division 1, 12th ranked Brea Olinda, the Patriots bounced back to win the 5th place game at the Marina Tournament, 49-47, over Edison High.

Sophia Chan hit a baseline runner in the final minute for the game winner. Austyn Masuno led the Patriots with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Chan had nine points and Angie Choi had six points and six steals.

Oxford had opened the tournament with a win over Long Beach Wilson, but met up with Brea, which is ranked No. 2 in Orange County. Brea led just 20-16 after the first quarter but the Wildcats were able to start pulling away in the second quarter, eventually winning 95-56.

Oxford rebounded in the fifth place bracket, topping Tustin, 61-37, to set up the fifth place game against Edison. Tustin led 28-21 about midway through the third before the Patriots went on a 40-9 run to take control of the game.

Masuno led the Patriots with 23 points and Chan had 12 points. Brianna Rodriguez added 10 points.
