Los Alamitos Medical Center officially celebrated the opening of its new Wound Healing and Hyperbarics center on Feb. 29, with a ribbon cutting and public open house event.

The center began operations in November and now gives the medical center a tool for aggressive treatment in the healing of wounds. The hyperbaric chambers treat patients by putting them in a pressurized oxygen-rich environment that forces extra oxygen to wounds and speeds healing.

“This delivers super oxygen to the tissues,” Dr. Ronald Holness said.

Wounds can come from accidents or can simply manifest as an effect of diseases such as diabetes. The chamber offers healing for any kind of wound. The primary function of the center will be for healing of wounds, but it can also offer treatment.

“We’re here to heal the wound, … but sometimes we do go after the root cause,” Holness said.

Holness said that the center can also help in offering or referring patients to other things that can aid healing, such as surgery. Patients will often spend a few hours at a time, but each is equipped with an external TV, with speakers in the chamber.

Before being prescribed hyperbaric chamber treatment, the center will make a full evaluation of the patient’s wound with regard to the cause and best way to treat it. Along with Dr. Holness and Hyperbaric Technician’s the center also has a team that includes Diabetes educators, dieticians, podiatrists, social workers and surgeons, as well as a Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse.
