A movie written by a graphic artist employed by Integrity Newspapers will be screened Sunday, Feb 27 at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre complex, the Golden State Film festival has announced.
“Gus and Chloe,” a movie that changes “father/daughter day forever,” is a short film in the mystery/horror category, the festival said.
The movie screenplay was co-written by Gregory Gibson, a graphic artist who works for the Culver City News in Gardena.
Gibson said while the movie is a triumph, it is a tragedy as well. Shortly after it was shot in Hong Kong by director Christopher “Bubba” Bates, who co-wrote the script, Bates was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and died shortly thereafter.
“We’ve finished the movie in his honor,” said Gibson, “and for it to play in such a prestigious location is truly a reflection of his short, yet amazing life.”
“Chris showed us how to live a life with integrity. I was lucky to know him, if only for a short moment in time. We collaborated on his directorial debut of the short film ‘Gus and Chloe.’ Ironically, the movie turned out to be a perfect metaphor for his life: brief but impactful,” said Gibson.
“One of life’s greatest tragedies is when the voice of an artist is silenced too soon. Had he lived, we can easily imagine the works of art he would have shared with the world. Therefore, this project honors his full potential by proposing to share his one and only cinematic creation with the widest audience possible,” he added.
The screening is private and awards will be given out after the entire block of short movies are shown, he said. Already, “Gus and Chloe” has picked up a number of awards, including at The Venice Short Films festival, the Catalina Film Festival, the Chicago Indie Film Awards and Hollywood Just4Shorts Film Festival.
