Griffin girls open playoffs with solid victory

The Los Alamitos High girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 55-33 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs on Saturday at Los Alamitos High.

Brianna Flynn led the Griffins with 17 points and Dani Iwami added 11 as the Griffins started hot and led 31-18 by halftime.

Bayley Hagino, Sarah Hermann and Samantha Kishek each contributed six points in the win. The Griffins advanced to the second round, where they will travel to Culver City High on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a second round game.

Los Al water polo falls

The Los Alamitos High girls water polo team defeated Dos Peublos in their first round CIF-SS playoff game, but fell to Laguna Beach in the quarterfinals to see their season come to an end.

Sarah Siepker scored a game-winning goal at the buzzer to lift the Griffins to a 9-8 win at Dos Peublos of Santa Barbara. Siepker had three goals in all and two assists, along with five steals to lead the Griffins. Abbey Blake and Lauren Dvonch each added two goals and Dvonch added four assists and four steals.

In the quarterfinals, the Griffins simply did not have enough to contain Laguna Beach, as the Breakers eliminated the Griffins, 18-5. The Breakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never let the Griffins back into the match. Siepker and Karley Kraft each had two goals. Siepker had three assists and five steals as well. The Griffins were 21-9 overall this season.

Boys soccer downs Dos Pueblos

The Los Alamitos High boys soccer team won its first round CIF-SS Division 1 playoff game, 1-0 over Dos Pueblos on Friday at Dos Pueblos.

Charlie Ross had the game-winning goal and Alec Lazar had five saves. The Griffins will host Harvard-Westlake in the second round today at 3 p.m.

Griffins boys hoops roll

The Los Alamitos High boys basketball team won its CIF-SS Division 1AA playoff opener, 73-54, over Long Beach Jordan.

The Griffins were led by Eyassu Worku, with 21 points, and Connor Laines with 13. Ryan Kusch had 12 points and Jack Kaub added nine for the Griffins. Los Alamitos jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and led 31-20 by halftime.

Los Alamitos was scheduled to host Valencia High on Tuesday in the second round.
