Griffin hoops takes early lead in league race

The Los Alamitos girls basketball team is off to a strong start in Sunset League play, having won its first four games to take an early lead in the title race.

The Griffins (4-0 in league) have a key game on Tuesday against Edison (3-1) at 7 p.m. at Los Alamitos High. Los Alamitos is coming off a 70-40 win over Marina on Monday, led by Dani Iwami with 19 points. Brianna Flynn had 13 points and Bayley Hagino and Sarah Hermann each chipped in nine. The Griffin defense held the Vikings to just 13 total points in the second and third quarters, allowing the Griffins to take control of the game and cruise to the win.

Prior to the Marina game, the Griffins were coming off a hard-fought 47-40 win over Fountain Valley on the road. Iwami was again the top scorer with 15 points, while Chanelle Crocker had nine. Hermann added eight and Hagino chipped in six. No single player for Fountain Valley scored in double digits, as both defenses had solid nights. Hermann added 11 rebounds to her eight points.

Griffin boys take early lead

The Los Alamitos High boys basketball team has also grabbed the early lead in the Sunset League race. The Griffins are 3-0 in league and 16-1 overall as they prepare to face Marina at home at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Griffins are coming off a 42-30 win over Fountain Valley on Friday. The Griffins were led by Jack Kaub with 12 points and Eyassu Worku who had 10. Kurtis Wirth and Ryan Kusch each chipped in six points.

The Griffins had opened league play with lopsided wins over Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach. After Friday’s home showdown, Los Alamitos will prepare for a road game at Edison, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28.
