Cypress (1-0) at Los Amigos (1-0)

Friday at Garden Grove High, 7 p.m.

Cypress opened the season with a solid 26-21 win against Fullerton, which was ranked No. 9 in the CIF-SS preseason poll in the Southwest Division. Centurion quarterback Nick Buras threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. The Cypress running game was led by Kevin Edwards and Quentin Pounds, who ran for 83 and 71 yards, respectively. Cypress has moved to No. 7 in the CIF-SS Southwest Division rankings.

The Centurion defense kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in the first quarter, but their ground game eventually produced in the final three quarters. The Hornets compiled 180 total rushing yards against Cypress. Los Amigos presents a similar challenge this week, as a playoff team from a year ago and was ranked No. 8 in the Southern Division in the preseason poll coming into the season, and have jumped to No. 2 in the poll.

The Lobos are coming off a 31-8 win over Godinez in their opener. The Lobos bring a run-oriented offense that was led by Moby Contreras in their win over Godinez. Contreras ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns and Luis Casas added 169 yards and two touchdowns.

Kennedy (1-1) vs. El Modena (1-0)

Friday at Western High, 7 p.m.

Kennedy bounced back from a loss to Fullerton in their opener to get a 28-23 win over Northwood on Thursday. The Fighting Irish were able to bounce back from a slow start that saw them trailing 14-0 at halftime against Northwood. TJ Williams finished the game with 210 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Adrian Quezada threw for 121 yards and a touchdown, while adding 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground.

El Modena was ranked No. 8 in the CIF-SS Southern Division preseason rankings, but scrapped to defeat a Woodbridge team that was expected to have a lot of playmakers in the skill positions. Their win vaulted them to the No. 2 rank in this week’s poll.

The Vanguards had 105 rushing yards from Kenneth Lamb, but only 49 total passing yards. That could bode well for Kennedy, who struggled against the pass in its first two games, allowing more than 200 yards through the air in each game.

Los Alamitos (1-0) vs. Eastlake, San Diego (1-1)

Friday at Long Beach Millikan High, 7 p.m.

The Griffins home game will move to Millikan High as they take on the Titans out of Chula Vista. Eastlake will bring a run oriented defense, as they have averaged more than 200 yards per game on the ground.

The Griffins are coming off a 41-9 win over Paramount in their opener last week. Paramount had improved last year, going 7-4 overall and making the playoffs. They had been ranked No. 10 in the CIF-SS Southeast division, after a week-one win over Long Beach Wilson, but have dropped out this week. Los Alamitos has also dropped from the top 10 of the West Valley division rankings, despite the win over Paramount.

The Griffins had 249 rushing yards in their opening win, led by Denzal Brantley’s 128 and Schuyler Whitehead’s 73. Each also had two rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Jack Telenko threw for 196 yards and one touchdown.

The Griffins’ freshman team will play Cathedral at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Los Al High grass field. The JV team will also be at home against Salesian, at 4 p.m. Thursday, on the schools turf field.
