Following public comments of citizens expressing concern over an unsolicited proposal from the Anaheim YMCA to merge with the city’s basketball and volleyball programs, the city has suddenly announced withdrawal of the proposal.
The city’s announcement came in the agenda for their Feb. 24 council meeting.
The city document noted the city’s Recreation and Community Services Department “includes an objective to identify opportunities to partner with neighboring cities, local schools, and non-profits to enhance services and efficiency.”
“Responding to this objective, the Anaheim Family YMCA presented a proposal to partner with RCS to provide youth basketball and volleyball leagues in Cypress,” according to the city.
However, “after the community meetings and the city council workshop, the YMCA withdrew their proposal,” the city noted in their upcoming agenda announcement.
Several Cypress residents lined up at the most recent council meeting to plead with city officials not to move forward with the proposal.
Citing the sentiment of Cypress residents’ expressing “enormous trust and value in the City of Cypress and any programs offered directly by the city,” during the public expressions. “As a result, RCS will continue to provide youth basketball and volleyball leagues,” they concluded.
Meanwhile, Ron Noda, the director of the Los Alamitos Recreation Department, said to the best of his knowledge, “we have not heard from anyone in Cypress Recreation” to discuss any potential partnerships or collaboration.”
Noda also noted that the city of Cypress was once a longtime co-sponsor of the annual Freedom fireworks display on July 4, however, they recently pulled out of that arrangement.
