Weaver School accepts challenge

Staff at Weaver Elementary School in Rossmoor accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from teacher Stacy Schmitz on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The ALS ice bucket challenge was started to build awareness and to raise money for ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS awareness is near and dear to the Weaver staff as one of their alumni parents, Jodi Oliver, was diagnosed with ALS in May of 2013.

Wearing their Weaver t-shirts, the principal, teachers and support staff met in the quad to completed the challenge with the help of kids who offered to dunk the water on them.

The Weaver staff then challenged all of the other schools in the Los Alamitos Unified School District, Superintendent Dr. Sherry Kropp and everyone at the district office to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The idea is to complete the challenge or donate money to the ALS organization, but most people who are doing the challenge are also choosing to donate to this worthy cause.  If you would like to make a donation, please donate to the ALS Walk Orange County – Team Jodi’s Brigade by visiting online at weboc.alsa.org. The walk will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Orange County Great Park.
