RWC recognizes students of the month

Rossmoor Woman’s Club recently named Cheryl Bond the September Los Alamitos High School Senior of the Month. She is a high–achieving student who has taken 6 AP courses and is currently enrolled in an additional 5 more including AP Calculus and AP Chemistry.

Cheryl is currently president of the largest club on Los Al’s campus, the California Scholarship Federation. It has more than 300 members and is focused on giving back to the community. Their mission statement is scholarship for service. In addition, Cheryl is an AP French student, a member of the French Honor Society and secretary of the French Club.

Her academic strength lies in the humanities and she hopes to attend her dream school, University of Chicago, with a double major in English and Political Science. She intends to continue her education in law school and become a trial lawyer, just as her mother and grandfather before her.

With her passion for music, she has studied piano in the Certificate of Merit program for 7 years. She is also a member of the LAHS choir SoundTrax, an award winning show choir named National Grand Champion two times running. She has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, the Grand Ole Opry, Chicago’s McCormick Theater and anticipates performing at the Lincoln Theater in New York this spring for a third national title.

Cheryl has many academic and musical achievements but also enjoys volunteering at church and in her community. She is a credit to her community and a deserving recipient of the RWC scholarship and award.

Madelyn Payne – RWC Oct SOM

Rossmoor Woman’s Club also announced Madelyn Payne as the October Los Alamitos High School Student of the Month. She developed from an uncaring Elementary School student to a dedicated learner. While maintaining a 3.5 GPA, she has managed to earn Varsity letters in two sports: diving and tennis. She started diving at 5 years old and has won the Sunset League Individual Title twice and Sunset League Team Champion all three seasons so far. Her tennis achievements include being part of the team winning the Sunset League Team Champion Title the last two years.

Her academic work is also exemplary. This past summer, she participated in two college programs for high school students. She traveled to Boston in June for the Brandeis University Global Youth Summit on the Future of Medicine and then again at the end of July for the MIT Online Science, Technology and Engineering Community which continues via Internet through January 2015.

When she isn’t participating in her sports or studying, Madelyn participates in the Spanish Honor Society, tutors students in Chemistry and Biology, and is the Activities Director for the Los Al Chemistry Network.

Throughout her high school career, she constantly worked to learn and grow academically as well as be a well-rounded individual.
