The Los Alamitos High softball team split a doubleheader at home during the final day of the Best of the West Tournament on Saturday, March 16. Though the Griffins started the day with a 6-3 loss to Norco, they finished with a 9-6 victory against Mater Dei.
The Los Alamitos High softball team split a doubleheader at home during the final day of the Best of the West Tournament on Saturday, March 16. Though the Griffins started the day with a 6-3 loss to Norco, they finished with a 9-6 victory against Mater Dei.
Los Al (7-4) finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Against Norco, the Griffins trailed 6-0 in the sixth inning.
“We needed to pitch better,” Los Alamitos Head Coach Rob Weil said.
The Griffins finished with only two hits – one of them a three-run homer during their final at-bat. Norco, on the other hand, finished with seven hits and five walks.
Sophomore Katie Neary started for the Griffins, lasting 2 2/3 innings.
Against Mater Dei, the Griffins trailed 2-0 in the third inning, but managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth. The Griffins then showed their offensive capabilities, notching five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
This marked the inaugural Best of the West Tournament, with Los Alamitos splitting hosting duties with Pacifica High.
Los Alamitos will return to action against Wilson on March 23. That game will start at 3:15 p.m.
