Los Alamitos Unified School District hired a District Safety Consultant, Captain Don Farrell, who began on Monday, March 18.

Captain Farrell retired after 33 years of law enforcement experience with the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Port Police, including leadership assignments in Threat Management, Terrorism Preparedness and Response, Tactical Planning, and Tactics Development.

Captain Farrell is visiting sites, meeting with principals, and conducting a threat assessment for each site. He will ensure that the district’s safety plans are up to date and implemented properly. He will be training staff members and implementing security drills at all sites. The district’s Safety Program will include an all-hazards threat assessment of each site and custom plans with site-specific suggestions for improvement.  District safety will remain an ongoing focus as they develop a culture of campus safety.

Captain Farrell has lived in the community since 1964 and graduated from Los Alamitos High School in 1973. His wife, Maura, recently retired after 17 years of working in the District’s CDC Program and both of his children are Griffin graduates.  He is passionate about this work and knows the community well.  When asked about this position, Captain Farrell said, “My goal is to make our schools the safest in the country.”
