Energy was high and the jazz unstoppable at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey on April 5 through April 7, where for a third year in a row, Los Alamitos High School Jazz I was one of only 12 high school big bands selected to compete.

This three-day event included performances by middle school through college-level ensembles as well as competitions.  Winners of this festival are invited to perform at the 56th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Groups are chosen by “blind audition.”

During the educational and fun-filled weekend, 21 students from Jazz I played four incredible charts during the competition phase, attended a jazz clinic, and performed in the open air outside the Museum of Monterey. Passersby were drawn in by the Latin groove of  “Samba de Los Alamitos” and remained to enjoy the band’s sensational set.

Los Alamitos High School Jazz I, Jazz II, and Jazz III are under the direction of John Rush and will be competing in the 51st Annual Reno Jazz Festival at the University of Reno, Nevada at the end of this month.
