The Griffins are the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and will now face top-seeded Laguna Beach today at 7 p.m. at the William Woollett Aquatic Center on the campus of Irvine High.
The Griffins broke away from San Marcos in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights, 4-1 in the final stanza.
The Griffins were led by Ella Weber with three goals, while Corinna Toledo and Sarah Siepker each added two. Karley Kraft, Makenna Oberst and Erika Pauley each chipped in a goal. Goalie Kennedy Joseph was credited with five saves.
The Los Alamitos High girls water polo team had little trouble with first round opponent Beckman High in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs on Wednesday at Ocean View High.
The Griffins defeated Beckman, 18-5, led by five goals from Karley Kraft. Abbey Blake and Sarah Siepker had three each and Ella Weber added two. Goalie Kennedy Joseph was credited with eight saves.
If the Griffins win tonight, they will face the winner of the Newport Harbor/Santa Barbara match, in the finals on Saturday at the William Woollett Aquatic Center.
