The Los Alamitos High girls soccer team opened up league play against Marina on Thursday, getting a 2-0 win over the Vikings, despite playing a little flat, according to head coach Steve Soler.
The Griffins had goals from Rachel Price and Hannah Goldsmith, both in the first half, and used their defense to make the goals stand up. Marina had a couple of good looks early in the second half, but could not convert. A free kick from the right side, just outside the box went across the goal but went just wide. A few minutes later, the Vikings again got behind the defense on an attack, but the shot from the left side went wide to the near side.
“Today, we got away with working hard at moments, I still think we were a little too flat,” Soler said.
Soler said the team seemed to still be groggy from the holiday break and noted that they hadn’t had a strong practice the day before and the half effort carried over into the game. However he was pleased they were able to still get the win and knows from their pre-league performance that they can compete with any team in their division.
“We know what we’re capable of. We know we can play a lot better than that,” Soler said.
Meghan Randig and Raya Young were each credited with an assist and goal-keeper Siena Ruelas had a save.
The Griffins were at home against Edison in a key league game on Tuesday and will play at Fountain Valley on Thursday at 3 p.m.
