Griffin girls hoops celebrate seniors, maintain league lead

The Griffins had taken a solid hold on the league race with a 57-51 win over Huntington Beach at Huntington High on Feb. 3.

With the game tied 27-27 at halftime, the Griffins came out strong in the third quarter to outscore the Oilers, 19-8 in the third quarter to gain control of the game. Dani Iwami led the Griffins with 15 points, while Chanelle Crocker and Briana Flynn each added 13. Bayley Hagino had 12 points and Sarah Hermann added 4.

Hagino had 22 points to lead the Griffins to a 58-51 win over Fountain Valley on Thursday. Flynn added 11 points as the Griffins improved to 8-0 in league play and 19-5 overall. Hermann had 7 points and 10 rebounds, while Iwami added eight points.

The Griffins will finish up the league season today with a game at Edison High at 7 p.m. Playoff seedings will be announced over the weekend.

 

Cypress girls basketball

The Cypress High girls basketball held off Tustin High in double overtime, 62-59, in  an Empire League game on Feb. 4 at Tustin High.

The Centurions led 28-18 at halftime, but Tustin was able to rally in the second half to tie the game at 48-48 at the end of regulation. Lindsay Masukawa led the Centrurions with 18 points, while Justina Yoo and Haley Morikawa each had 14 points. Aggie Manu chipped in 12 points for Cypress, which improved to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in league play with the win.

The Centurions will finish league play with a game at Western High on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

 

Fighting Irish fall

The Kennedy High girls basketball team fell to 3-3 in Empire League play with a 58-49 loss to Pacifica on Feb. 4 at Kennedy High.

The Fighting Irish (10-7) were led by Ariana Conant with 18 points and Camryn Hamaguchi, who added eight. Kylie Masumiya had seven points and Kaitlin Matsugama added six.

But the Irish were unable to contain Pacifica’s Taylor Ivicevic, who scored a game-high 23 points. Kennedy was at Cypress High on Tuesday and will finish league play on Thursday with a home game against Tustin High at 5:30 p.m.

 

Girls water polo

The Los Alamitos High girls water polo team kept its hold on second place in the Sunset League, with wins in its last two league matches. The Griffins defeated Huntington Beach, 15-5, and followed that with a 10-6 win over Edison on Feb. 4.

Edison likely will grab the third place spot out of the league, and was in position to challenge the Griffins for the second place spot. But Los Alamitos thwarted the challenge early as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Chargers in the first quarter before holding them off for the win.

Sarah Siepker led the Griffins with four goals and four steals. Lauren Dvonch and Calyssa Toledo had two goals and four steals each for the Griffins. Dovnch also added a team-high three assists. Abbey Blake and Jessica Lee each added a goal. Goalie Kennedy Joseph was credited with four saves.

The Griffins will close out league play against Fountain Valley today, at 6:05 p.m. at Newport Harbor High. The Griffins will play a non-league match against Long Beach Wilson, on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Joint Forces Training Base pool, before awaiting playoff seedings over the weekend.

 

Griffins keep pace

The Los Alamitos High boys basketball team improved to 6-1 in Sunset League play and 20-2 overall with convincing wins over Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. The Griffins beat Huntington Beach, 73-45, on Feb. 4, then topped Fountain Valley, 61-36, on Friday at Fountain Valley.

Ryan Kusch and Eyassu each had 13 points to lead the Griffins, while Jack Kaub added 11. Fountain Valley was able to keep pace in the first half, as the Griffins held a 28-26 lead at halftime. But the Griffin defense clamped down in the second half, holding the Barons to just 10 points in the final two quarters.

The Griffins will close out the season with a key game at home against league-leading Edison, on Friday at 7 p.m.
