Fall Prep Sports: Griffins looking to make their mark

Consistency on the court is what Los Alamitos girls volleyball team will need in order to enjoy success this year says coach Dave Huber.
“We are building on consistency with the things that we are executing,” said Huber.
Los Al graduated many of its core players last year and is only returning three starters.

Los Al graduated many of its core players last year and is only returning three starters.
One of those starters at his disposal is team captain Mackenzie Smith, who returns as a senior outside hitter.
“She is just the one that best represents what we are trying to accomplish,” said Huber when asked about why Smith is team captain. “She is a hard worker and all the girls respect her.”
Two players Huber  is hoping will shine on the offensive front with Smith, is Nicole Elder, and Ryleigh McGill.
Both are juniors and both have shown great play in making position switches in recent tournaments, said Huber.
The Los Alamitos High girls volleyball team has had a busy offseason, including play in a Hawaii Tournament.
The Griffins finished third in the Sunset League last year, but did win a playoff game against Lakewood. The Griffins opened this season at home against Long Beach Wilson on Aug. 30.
Despite the recent matches, Huber said his toughest opponents have yet to come.
Huntington Beach and Edison High School have both seen great success against the Griffins. Both have beat Los Al in their last four meetings, which means Los Al has yet to see a victory against them both in over two years.
Huber is optimistic his team will be ready once the time comes to face the local volleyball powerhouses.
For him, they need to get into their groove and show up energized to the big games.
“Hopefully they are excited and ready to go,” said Huber.
