The Cypress Police Department this week announced the death of retired Cypress Police dog Sem, who during his police career amassed an incredible record of accomplishment.
“We are sad to announce the passing of retired Cypress Police K9 Sem. Those who got a chance to meet him knew him to be a happy and dedicated servant who loved to patrol the streets of Cypress and protect our community,” said the tribute posted to a website dedicated to police K9 heroes.
During his career, he completed nearly 350 narcotics searches, seizing 168 pounds of drugs and $265,000 worth of drug money. He tirelessly completed over 1,000 searches of buildings and vehicles looking for bad guys and managed to capture and arrest many of them (including two wanted for murder). He retired to live with his handler, Sergeant Rebecca Mondon where he enjoyed hanging out and relaxing after an exciting and productive career.
He was put to rest on July 15th with Sergeant Mondon by his side. Sem will truly be missed and will live forever in our hearts, the statement concluded.
Coincidentally, at this week’s city council meeting, the Cypress Police Foundation donated “Bono,” their newest police K9 to the department. Bono is a three-year-old German Shepherd that has completed more than 240 hours of training.
Dr. Don Pettinger, President of the Foundation, said “we are extremely blessed to present this dog to the department. We are happy to… support the brave men and women of the department in any way we can.”
The Council accepted the police dog donation, valued at $17,622.
