Clara J. King Elementary School was one of 40 recipients honored with the 2020 Golden Bell Award by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). Each year, CSBA recognizes outstanding educational programs and school governance practices that effectively address the needs of California students.
The award-winning program at King supports students’ social-emotional development. All students learn strategies to promote emotion regulation, peaceful conflict resolution, empathy, and responsible decision-making through age-appropriate lessons.
“We are honored by CSBA’s acknowledgment of our work with social-emotional learning. Now, more than ever, our students need daily support that goes beyond academic learning,” said Principal Jacki Teschke.
“The staff at King has worked tirelessly over the past three years to develop a model social-emotional learning program. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments and the positive impact it’s had on students,” said Cypress School District Superintendent Anne Silavs.
A judging panel composed of experts from school districts and county offices of education across the state reviewed written entries and made initial recommendations. Validators then reviewed the recommendations and virtually assessed the programs in action. This year’s Golden Bell winners demonstrated that they are addressing student needs through areas such as equity and access, school climate and safety, technology, and wellness.
“Now more than ever is a time to acknowledge and celebrate innovative and impactful programs that make a difference in the lives of our young people,” said CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy. “This year’s Golden Bell winners truly serve as beacons of success as we work to more fully and equitably serve all of California’s public school students.”
