LAUSD makes OCR grade A

The Orange County Register published its annual rankings of Orange County school districts and Los Alamitos Unified School District was one of the top districts among 27 school districts in the county.

At Friday’s monthly networking breakfast for the Los Alamitos Area Chamber of Commerce, several comments were made regarding the success and reputation of the district and how it can be a major factor in keeping the housing market strong because families want to live in a district with good schools.

Two days later the Register published its report with LAUSD ranking as the top among elementary schools and second in both middle and high schools. It certainly lent credence to the statements that are often made about the job LAUSD teachers and staff members are doing for area children.

It can be difficult to compare school districts against each other because of the fact that there can be so many distinct differences, as was noted in the story. Some districts might not have been in the top listed schools, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t make great improvements.

But rising to the top with so many factors being considered in the ranking certainly says a lot about the schools that were in the top 5 lists.

Good Neighbor ordinance

The mood at Mondays Los Alamitos City Council meeting was quite a change from recent animosities. The council has effectively called a cease-fire on political infighting in the hopes of getting some work done for the city.

It’s a good idea, and residents can only hope it lasts. Though not any kind of ordinance was passed, it was put on the agenda almost like they were passing a good neighbor law. I kept thinking about the Seinfield finale when they were prosecuted for violating the Good Samaritan law. What happens when one council member takes a shot at another? Might we see a Good Neighbor prosecution?
