School Ghoul to run again in Rossmoor

October is here and Halloween horrors will soon be upon us. Even before that, ghouls will be running the streets of Rossmoor.

October is here and Halloween horrors will soon be upon us. Even before that, ghouls will be running the streets of Rossmoor.

The 3rd Annual School Ghoul run is set to run on Oct. 19 to raise money for the Los Alamitos Unified School District. The event was started three years ago, when Los Alamitos realtor Gus Quinonez was looking for a way to thank the community for the support it gave his son Kai, as he was battling a rare blood disease.

Kai has continued to make improvements and is now a student at McAuliffe Middle School. The event showed strong growth in its first two years, and organizers are expecting an even better turnout this year.

“The response from the community has been tremendously encouraging,” Event Director Laurie Beverage said. “This event is generating a lot of interest from the running community as well.”

Beverage has worked alongside Gus at Keller Williams Realty in Los Alamitos and on the School Ghoul. Gus, a former elite runner in high school and college, acts as the Race Director. In just its second year, the run drew the interest of other local elite runners, who like the flat, shaded streets of Rossmoor for potentially good race times.

In addition to the run, the event hosts activities such as a pancake breakfast, community expo and a pumpkin patch and Ghoul Zone for kids.

School Ghoul is an opportunity for all members of the community to work together to support education of mind, heart, and spirit for the many students in the LAUSD, organizers said.
